I’ll start by saying that I am very particular about nail polish. Mostly because I am not very good at painting my nails and I hate removing polish. Because of this I prefer a certain type of brush, formula & shade (my crappy paint jobs are much more obvious with bright or dark colors). If the color requires more than two coats to look nice, I won’t use it. Although Essie and OPI have great shades, I don’t particularly like the formula or the brush. So I was very pleasantly surprised to discover the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel nail polish last week. This is a gel formula that does not require a light to set and claims to give up to 14 days of color and shine.
I got mine on a whim (like most of my purchases) after I found a 20% cartwheel coupon at Target. Given the claims on the formula of a 14 day chip-free manicure (yeah right!) I went for a bright coral shade called Pretty Piggy and the top coat.
Why I love it?
1) The brush is awesome. It’s wider & flatter than traditional brushes which results in a smoother application.
2) The formula dries quickly and evenly. And the color is opaque enough to require only two coats.
3) The top coat dries even quicker and leaves a very glossy finish
4) This lasting power is SEVEN days. Yes, seven. Most nail polish formulas chip on me within three days. Four if I am extra careful.
Obviously the polish didn’t last 14 days, as the bottle claims, but I didn’t expect that it would. Unless I get a manicure with the type of gel that requires a UV lamps I know my polish won’t last two weeks. So, that being said, the durability is insane because this last week I went to various workout classes, did laundry, cleaned and generally lived my life with little care for my nails.
Both pictures of my nails in this post are 8 days after I applied the polish (I didn’t realize I would like this polish so much so I didn’t take a picture the day I applied it). There were only a few chips. Honestly, this is how regular polish looks on my hands after day 3.
I was so impressed with the lasting power that I went back and bought another shade that I am trying out this week.
I am not sure if the lasting power is ultimately a combination of using the same brand for your color and top coat, or, if the magic is just in the top coat. But at $7-8 per bottle, these are still really affordable compared to other brands. I may try using another brand and then just the top coat to see if I get the same results.
Have any of you tried this polish? I may need to quickly expand my color selection and stop wasting my money on other more expensive brands that chips within a couple of days.
UPDATE 7/31/16: Friends, after my success with this color I went back and purchased two other colors. I bought the color Pinky Rings (a pastel pink) and Birthday Suit (a white-nude color). I had great results with Pinky Rings – the polish lasted 6 days in good condition. Birthday Suit on the other hand was a complete failure. The formula was not very opaque and required 3 coats to even look decent. And the worst part? It chipped that same day!
Obviously not all colors are created equal so beware!
