I’m on a roll again with weekly favorites today with the Nugg Beauty Charcoal Skin Detox Face Mask! I don’t think I’ve missed a post in a few weeks. I’m doing my very best to post 3-4 times a week. But guys.. it’s HARD. Each post is so much work. Between writing, pictures, editing & graphics, each post is at least 3 hours. For the most part, I spend all day Sunday working on the blog. I’m very much and all or nothing person. I either work on the blog for hours on end, or I don’t work on it at all. I’m definitely not the type of blogger that can work on it a little at a time. Plus, I have that whole other full time job situation going on.
Anyways, this week’s favorite is another skin care item – it’s the Nugg Beauty Charcoal Skin Detox Face Mask. I originally tried this face mask after Nugg Beauty sent me a little PR package (I feel so profesh right now). Although I’ve gotten a few other skin care PR packages, nothing’s been good enough to make it to a post until now.
Obviously the first pod I got was sent to me by Nugg Beauty, however, this is NOT a sponsored post. All subsequent pods I used were purchased with my own money. Nugg Beauty did not send the sample with the expectation that I would write a post or mention that I received their products (which is very refreshing!). This post is simply a result of me loving one of the products they sent 🙂
All the Nugg Beauty face masks are gel based and come in little single use pods. Unlike sheet masks, you apply the gel with your fingers and let it sit for 10 minutes (without covering with a sheet). There are around 8-9 Nugg Beauty face masks. I believe all run at $3.99 each.
Why I Love It
+ This is the only charcoal/clay based face mask I own that is a gel formula. That means it doesn’t dry out and feel tight. As you can see in the picture below, I have quite a few other charcoal/clay based masks. And although I like them, they all feel extremely dry & tight while they are on. They also leave my skin feeling relatively dry. The Nugg Beauty Charcoal Skin Detox Mask doesn’t do that. Not even close. The gel just sits on your skin without any dryness.
+ The ingredients in this mask are charcoal, Kaolin Clay, Oatmeal, Zinc, Aloe and Tea Tree. None of my other masks have a combination quite like this. I particularly like that it has tea tree oil since I’ve had good experiences using tea tree oil for acne.
+ Each pod is $3.99 which is more affordable than most sheet masks. They also sell these at Target 🙂
+ I actually love the pod idea. Sheet masks are nice, but they don’t always cover my entire face + you can only do one type at a time. With these single use pods, you can actually decide what area of your face to apply them. The product is enough for the entire face, but if you wanted to avoid certain areas, you certainly could.
+ Piggybacking on my point above, these are so convenient for travel! They are really tiny & you don’t need anything but your hands to apply. I could never travel with the Aztec Healing clay mask. Not only is the jar ginormous, but you also need water, a spatula and a bowl to mix it in.
+ All the Nugg Beauty masks are made of 97% or more natural ingredients and do not have mineral oil, chemical emulsifiers, parabens, synthetic fragrances or colors. They are also manufactured in the US and cruelty free.
+ In terms of results, I find this mask just as effective as the Origins or the Aztec Healing mask, but a lot less drying and irritating. Obviously it’s hard to compare exactly since I don’t use it in conjunction with other masks, but it definitely helps keep breakouts under control. Is it a miracle worker? Are breakouts zapped overnight? No, but I have yet to come across a product that performs that way.
What I Don’t Like
+ Although the price per pod is super affordable at $3.99, this can get expensive if used regularly. Say you use 1 pod per week for a month, that will cost you $16 per month. The Origins Clear Improvement mask is $26 for a tube while the Aztec Healing Clay is $10.30 for a pound. YES, a whole pound. Both of those would easily last more than 3 months if used once a week. I did find the Nugg Beauty Charcoal Skin Detox Face Mask on Amazon. If you buy a pack of 5, the price comes down to ~$3.5 per pod.
+ Like all charcoal/clay masks, this can be hard to completely remove unless you use a washcloth. I’m not sure this can be avoided considering the ingredients.
I really love this mask. It was the first one I was drawn to from the package Nugg Beauty sent over. Although I’ve liked all the other Nugg masks, this one is by far my favorite. Considering the saturation of masks in the beauty world, Nugg Beauty really managed to create something unique with the gel formula & the ingredient deck. I can appreciate that. Masks are also really fun! I find myself more likely to use the pods than sheet masks – I just find the general formula and application process much more comfortable than anything else.
