I’ll start this post by warning you – there are lots of product reviews currently in the works. After my crazy Sephora VIB Haul (& some spontanous purchases after that) I have a plethora of products to share. Some may come in the form of weekly favorites, five on Friday’s or even beauty product fails posts. But, today, I want to have a dedicated post on self tanning. More specifically, my thoughts on the St Tropez Dark Bronzing Mousse.
If you’ve been reading along, you know two things:
+ First, I will not tan in the sun. Seriously people, it’s 2017, THERE IS NO SAFE WAY TO TAN IN THE SUN. Read that several times until it’s ingrained in your mind. Putting on SPF before laying out is not a safer way to tan. All you are doing is slowing down the process. Tan skin from the sun is literally pigment from DAMAGED skin. It blows my mind that with everything we know about skin cancers people are still intentionally sitting out in the sun to look darker. This is just like people smoking to look cooler. For real. I could rant about this for hours. But, more about this soon.
+ On a second, and lighter, note – my go to tanning product was the Tan Towel Plus towelettes. They’re so easy and convenient, just take out a towelette, rub around areas to tan, wait until it dries and you’re done. No tanning mitt, no washing off later, nothing. Although the colors isn’t as deep as I’d like, the convenience of the whole thing is unparalleled.
Sadly, I started having issues finding these on Amazon (or anywhere else for that matter). At one point I thought they were discontinued. So, the search for a new self tanning product started. Keep in mind I’ve tried the Jergen’s Gradual Tanning Lotion. Although it works, I can’t deal with the smell. Since I end up having to apply it daily to get the color I want, I end up smelling strongly of self tanner every. single. day. I can’t dot it.
So, after a ton of research, I concluded that the best self tanning products on the market are the St Tropez Dark Bronzing Mousse and the Loving Tan Deluxe Bronzing Mousse. Loving Tan is an Australian company so not only is shipping expensive, but it would take a while to get an order. Therefore, impatience won and I went with the St Tropez Dark Bronzing Mousse.
You apply this mousse wherever you want to tan around 24 hours after exfoliating the skin. I used the St Tropez Mitt to apply in circular motions. Note I applied lotion on my ankles, knees, elbows and hands before going over those areas. After the product dries you can get dressed and wait for it to develop. Keep in mind that the color does transfer so don’t wear anything nice! Wash off after 4-8 hours. The picture below is what the dark tan looks like after leaving it on 8 hours on my arm.
+ This mousse does exactly what it claims – it gives a sun kissed – NON orange tan within 4-8 hours (depending on how dark you want to go)
+ If you exfoliate before hand, follow the instructions and use a tanning mitt, this does not look streaky or patchy. It goes on pretty evenly.
+ The mousse is actually tinted when it comes out so you can easily see where you’ve applied product and where you haven’t. You can also see if you need to blend certain areas.
+ The mousse dries quickly and is not super sticky (although I can still feel like there is something on my skin)
+ On me the tan wears out fairly evenly. Around day 5-6 I start seeing a bit of patchiness which is my signal to exfoliate and take it off. But, so far it hasn’t been very visible.
+ I’ve used this all over my body (except the face) 5 times already and the bottle still feels pretty full. It’s a lot more cost effective than Tan Towels. Plus, the color is around 3 shades darker than what I could get with Tan Towels.
+ The claims that this product does not smell are BS. It most certainly smells like self tanner when you put it on. Thankfully, the smell dissipates significantly once you wash it off.
+ Product will come off even after you initially wash it. You have to be carefully to pat with a towel after showing (instead of rubbing), otherwise a bit of product will rub off on your towels. I also noticed some of it came off on my sports bras after working out #tmi.
+ This product makes my skin REALLY dry. I’ve never had that happen with a self tanner. I’m having to use twice as much lotion – especially on my legs.
Overall I’m really happy with this product and have recommended it to my friends. Sure, it smells when you first apply it, and dries out my skin. But, I can get over those things since the smell is minimal once you wash off the original application. And I just use extra lotion for my legs. Ultimately I can get several shades darker (NOT orange) overnight just using a product at home. The color is nice a olive toned, it lasts around a week, and I can tan at home. Most importantly, I’m not subjecting my skin to harmful UV rays! I will be using this weekly during the summer.
